Breadgirl Bakery

Reno, Nevada · 2025

Jalene on baking, the banana miso cookie, and building Breadgirl with her community. Read the transcript

Before Breadgirl was a business, baking was the thing Jalene kept coming back to. Between school, ballet, and work, it offered a little peace—and something she could share with the people around her.

This short film follows that thread from a childhood hobby to a community in Reno. Jalene talks about the stubborn process of getting her banana miso cookie right, learning from the people who taste her work, and growing a bakery without losing the friends, family, and connections that made it possible.

Breadgirl Bakery was a finalist in the University of Nevada, Reno’s 2026 Sontag Entrepreneurship Competition. Its pop-ups and collaborations bring Latin and Asian flavors into Reno’s pastry scene. Read the UNR feature ↗

The film gives Jalene room to tell the story in her own words. The kitchen setting and unhurried conversation keep the focus on the person behind Breadgirl: her curiosity, the batches that did not work, and the happiness she finds in making something for others.
