THE STORY
This family session took its cue from the charm of a 90s department-store portrait studio: a simple gray backdrop, direct flash, colorful clothes, and the kind of posing that feels a little formal until everyone starts laughing. The concept gave the group a shared visual language, but it also left room for each person to show up as themselves.
The result is a set of family portraits with a clear point of view. There are classic groupings, paired portraits, and more playful frames, all made in the same small space. Together, they feel like a family album from a parallel universe—familiar, slightly offbeat, and full of the people who make it worth keeping.
THE APPROACH
A strong family session needs enough direction to keep the photographs moving and enough flexibility for real chemistry to come through. I started with a clean studio setup and a simple visual reference, then used small prompts, changes in height, and quick shifts between pairings to create variety without making the experience feel stiff.
The wardrobe, backdrop, and lighting carried the 90s inspiration, so the people did not have to perform it. That made room for the best kind of in-between moments: a laugh breaking through a pose, a spontaneous pile-up, or a look between two people who know each other well.
